On the contrary -- studio chatter is a crucual part of the
recording atmosphere, and I love to keep its snatches in my
recordings. I remember while I was positioning the mike and
adjusting the stuff, we chatted with the performer about the
song he was going to play and sing, so that his story about
Chuck Berry's adapting his guitar work to Johnny Johnnson's
pinano playing on the black keys segued into the first take
so smoothly that I dared not cut the chatter out.

Jerry Lee Lewis had spells of extensive chatter with the
enginieer and musicians.

Not sure you understood, or perhaps you did and you are very serious about
jokes. But my point was if you open it, it will make recordings impossible
because of all the noisy laughter emanating from it. Compare with one of
those joke bags you could by in the 70s (perhaps still available, haven't
looked) with a battery driven "recording" of someone laughing like crazy.
"Bag of Laughs" or something, I believe it was called. The one we had
didn't look like this:

Not a clown on the outside, but a similar thing inside of it, some plastic
thing with a "speaker" (well) and some plastic "record" that produced the
noise.

That is exactly the way I understood you.
